Trilby Hat by Ataahua- Huzzah caffeine

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Here is a great little bit of recycling, a Cuban coffee growers hat constructed from “upcycled” Hessian coffee sacks. Each hat is a unique design obviously due to the source material being inconsistent. Here is a small blurb pilfered from the New Zealand design site about the Ataahua company that produced the hats-

Ataahua (Maori for Beautiful) is a Wellington based design company that produces unique linen products using contemporary pacific designs and quality craftsmanship. Founder/owner/designer Bernadette Casey marries Pacific and Western designs that reflect the unique beauty of our heritage and environment.

Livity Punk Pie Hat- I say Oi!

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Here is a fun hat from the eco friendly company Livity. The stout little hat is made from cotton and canvas and comes in these two colors featured in the picture. This punk pie style (play on pork pie obviously) was a favorite of musicians in the early days of punk rock and ska, and remains a classic.

Cyberoptix Electric Blue Tentacle Tie: Cthulhian neckwear

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Sadly I do not wear ties, or I would be all over this electrifying offering from the indie designers at Cyberoptix. Not only have they chosen one of my favorite jewel bright shades of blue, they have graced it with a silk screened jumble of black tentacles. Brings to mind the great old one, Cthulhu, or perhaps an octopus or Architeuthis, the much sought after giant squid. All positive associations in my mind, and I am sure this bright bold necktie will be one hell of a conversation starter. Listed as a standard tie made of microfiber, this tentacled beauty is available in electric blue or sage green through Shana Logic.

Diesel Men’s Ankle Boots: fashionable and militaristic

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Paying much homage to the folks in uniform, these snazzy lace up combat boots from Diesel are super sweet. Resembling the coveted desert stryker style, they are composed of leather and canvas and provide a secure lightweight brogan that deals well with heat and has more flexibility in the ankle than a traditional all leather boot. Excellent for an urban environment! The soles are all leather, and the boots feature contrast stitching for style. No side zipper here, they are full lace up and look to be about the height of Doc Marten 10 holes. Available in black (shown below), beige or dark green.

Zodiac Rdg CH- Swiss Style

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

This watch from Zodiac definitely exemplifies Swiss design aesthetic. The stainless steel bracket is contrasted nicely by the black dial, which in turn makes the small red logo pop visually. The hash marks around the outer rim of the dial give it an additional tech like appearance. All in all, this is a very nice mid range priced watch.

Nixon Murf- Good enough for Mos

Monday, April 7th, 2008

This is a nice new design from Nixon that has an interesting face. The time rotates out from under the face cover, which shields half of the watch from view, giving it a unique and stylish appearance. The watch is only slightly waterproofed, as it is clearly not a performance vehicle, and it comes in a few different color varieties, including wood panel for real retro loungers. Hip-Hop mogul Mos Def is modeling the watch on the website intro…Say what you will about Mos, the cat’s got style.

Wool and Akita hair Round Cap: stripey doggy goodness for your head

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Wow, who knew you could use your 4 legged pals’ scrap hair from brushings and have a custom dog hair hat knit by indie designer Lisa from Handspun Hats? (some restrictions do apply - check out the doggy hats page for more details) All the available hats are hand knit from hand spun and hand dyed yarn. Lisa is one hell of a hardcore maker! I am smitten with this blue and red round hat which happens to include Akita hair. A medium weight knit, this charming round cap is designed to cover the ears. Other fibers used include Corriedale wool, Merino wool and tussah silk. This hat is number 18 on the page.
